CLIENT GOALS

Our client’s goal was to maximize the square footage of their residential home by adding a secondary rental unit, without modifying the exterior envelope of the property.

DESIGN SOLUTION

This lovely Cole Valley home took advantage of a change in San Francisco Planning Code, which allows for the development of an Accessory Dwelling Unit, also known as an ADU.

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), sometimes also referred to as secondary units, in-law units, or cottages are additions to existing residential buildings. In 2016, San Francisco’s Accessory Dwelling Unit Program became available Citywide in zoning districts that permit residential use.
Adding an ADU to your property can provide several benefits, such as creating housing for family members, increasing an income stream, and adding value to your existing residential property.

This ADU added a nearly 800 square foot, 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment with a living room and dining area and private garden and entrance.
The once single family home, now boasts 2 legal units.
