Contemporary Deck with a San Francisco View
30 years into its life, the 4 th floor servant quarters of this architecturally significant Arts & Crafts home was devastated by fire. Where the original building and main floors of the house were saved, the rear attic floor burned quite substantially.
Despite the lack of the Golden Gate Bridge view at the time of the fire (construction had not started), the then owner had a vision to eliminate the roof line and building enclosure at the rear of the attic floor, creating an elevated outdoor space –a very unique residential feature for its time.
For nearly 90 years the elevated outdoor space largely served as an informal deck for the multigenerational family.
The primary goal of the project was to provide the growing family with an outdoor space that rivals the beauty and sophistication of the interior, utilizing modern building techniques and materials.
The design solution included a substantial structural upgrade, modern deck surface waterproofing, infrared heat system, glass guardrail system, and an elevated deck system allowing for ease of maintenance. The custom-fabricated window and door system enhances the view from the interior, while providing modern energy efficiency.
“Gina and her team did an amazing job on my 1890's Victorian. The project required an incredible amount of craftsmanship and attention to detail to keep this Victorian looking original. This was the best experience I have hadwith a contractor to date.”
