Form and Function: Mixed Design Minimalism

The renovation of this San Francisco mid-century bathroom was a source of inspiration and a challenge. The client goal was to maintain the existing minimalist style, while
introducing contemporary “maximalist” design, and improving functionality.

Two key elements of the project were:

  1. Form:  With its central first floor location, the bathroom aesthetics needed to be elegant and integrate with the adjacent foyer, kitchen and living room.
  2. Function:  As the primary bathroom for two teenage girls, the space required functional lighting, plenty of practical storage, and finishes that are easy to maintain.

The bathroom was a follow-on project and designed to connect with the renovated kitchen Team Centoni completed four years prior.

The footprint of the bathroom was expanded into a lightwell, and a solar powered operable skylight added to provide natural light and air circulation.  The expansion allowed for a custom 6.5-foot-long walnut vanity that provides a warm glowing finish, and efficient use of space.

The shower features Kohler rain and handheld showers, as well as a bench for a more relaxed showering experience.

To achieve a clean and minimal design, four different handmade tiles (Pratt & Larson) were selected, as well as a custom fabricated marble countertop, and brass hardware, while still maintaining a clean Norwegian-style design.

The clients love their new bathroom - plenty of storage, clean lines, and natural light and ventilation that functions perfectly day-to-day for the family, as well as their guests.
